Carbohydrate Report

Unlock a personalized approach to dietary carbohydrates

Do you feel pressure to be on a low-carb or ketogenic-style diet? Not sure which diet to follow? Use your genetic data as a foundational guide for deciding what diet is right for you. Genetic factors accounted for nearly half (48%) of the variability in how much glucose levels rose 2h after a meal in advanced studies, like the PREDICT-1 Trial.

Carbs are GOOD
★★★★★

“Once I went back to carbs (based on the Okinawa diet) and quit the whole 30/paleo diet as well as any attempts at Keto or low-carb, my weight stopped rising, and actually started to go down (and I didn’t even follow the Okinawa diet very strictly, and did no caloric restriction)!”

Best health decision of my adult life
★★★★★

“Acquiring a custom nutrition plan from Gene Food was the single best health decision of my adult life. I frequent the Gene Food blog & the Gene Food podcast. John O’Connor and Dr. Aaron Gardner are focused on providing individuals with the very best science based information today. I believe their individualized approach, not the “one size fits all” seen frequently, is the future of optimizing health and wellness.”

Find out how your body actually handles carbs

Low-carb works for some people and backfires for others. In the PREDICT-1 trial, genetics accounted for nearly half of the variation in how much blood sugar rose two hours after a meal. Our CLIA-certified test scores your carbohydrate response across multiple validated SNPs, matches you to one of 20 diet types, and turns it into a plan: the carbs that suit you, the ones to limit, and a two-week meal plan built around them.

Frequently asked questions

The carbohydrate report is built into the core of our diet type scoring matrix and uses polygenic risk scoring to estimate an individual's blood sugar response. This means we evaluate several SNPs to assign each user a comprehensive carbohydrate score. Once users have learned their genetic predispositions, they can further personalize their approach by using a continuous blood glucose monitor if they so choose.

Review of large scale GWAS studies. In addition, the PREDICT-1 study teaches us that genetics play a major role in the postprandial blood sugar response after eating. Our research team uses our unique Science Grade approach to assign weights to the SNPs we include in our carbohydrate scoring, with the most scientifically validated genetic markers receiving the highest weight.

For example, there is one SNP in TCF7L2 that is associated with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, 53341C>T.

The so-called “farmer” variant of rs7903146 (C/C) is linked to a better carbohydrate response. People who carry the “farmer” variant tend to have a more controlled blood sugar response after eating carbohydrates and maintain lower blood sugar levels than those who carry the T variant.
