Exercise report: strength vs. endurance

Learn your body’s ideal form of exercise

Just as we respond differently to different dietary inputs based on genetics, not everyone is suited to the same exercise regimen. Genetic variations can influence the proportion of fast-twitch and slow-twitch muscle fibers in an individual. This can affect their performance in different athletic events. For example, some people may have a genetic predisposition for endurance sports due to a higher percentage of slow-twitch muscle fibers.

Carbs are GOOD
★★★★★

“Once I went back to carbs (based on the Okinawa diet) and quit the whole 30/paleo diet as well as any attempts at Keto or low-carb, my weight stopped rising, and actually started to go down (and I didn’t even follow the Okinawa diet very strictly, and did no caloric restriction)!”

“Acquiring a custom nutrition plan from Gene Food was the single best health decision of my adult life. I frequent the Gene Food blog & the Gene Food podcast. John O’Connor and Dr. Aaron Gardner are focused on providing individuals with the very best science based information today. I believe their individualized approach, not the “one size fits all” seen frequently, is the future of optimizing health and wellness.”

Find out how your body actually handles carbs

Low-carb works for some people and backfires for others. In the PREDICT-1 trial, genetics accounted for nearly half of the variation in how much blood sugar rose two hours after a meal. Our CLIA-certified test scores your carbohydrate response across multiple validated SNPs, matches you to one of 20 diet types, and turns it into a plan: the carbs that suit you, the ones to limit, and a two-week meal plan built around them.

Frequently asked questions

Numerous studies concerning the association between the ACE genotype and athlete status have shown that the I allele is linked to lower ACE activity in both serum and tissue compared with the D allele. Consequently, the II genotype is associated with improvement in endurance sports while the DD genotype provides an advantage for sports requiring sprinting or short bursts of power.

Similarly, The ACTN3 gene is one of the most studied genes related to exercise performance. It encodes a protein found in fast-twitch muscle fibers, which are important for explosive, power-based activities.

For the ACTN3 gene, the C allele (specifically, the 577R variant) is associated with fast-twitch muscle fibers and explosive power. Individuals who have the CC or CT genotype tend to have a greater presence of functional fast-twitch muscle fibers, which are advantageous for activities that require short bursts of high-intensity power, such as sprinting or weightlifting.

Of course, this does not mean that those of us better suited to endurance activities should avoid lifting weights, just that we can build our "staple" activities around the movements our body is better suited for.

Our Exercise Report can offer insights into what are the best staple exercises for your body for optimal performance.

Genetic insights allow for the customization of exercise routines that align with your actual capabilities rather than the regimen offered by a fitness influencer. For instance, individuals with genetic markers favoring endurance may benefit more from aerobic activities like running or cycling, while those inclined toward strength might excel in resistance training. Tailoring workouts can optimize performance and reduce the risk of injury.

This report is available with the Methylation Bundle (Health Intelligence), alongside the core reports included with your Gene Food DNA test. Current bundle pricing is shown above.

Like all our tests, the Exercise report is a simple cheek swab test. A self-addressed return envelope is included with the test kit, as are detailed instructions for taking the test. The swab sample is sent to our CLIA-certified laboratory in Houston, where the sequencing occurs.
