Iron Deficiency Genetic Report

Learn whether you have a genetic risk for low iron levels

Iron deficiency is typically diagnosed through a series of blood tests. However, many of us are at an increased risk of iron deficiency due to genetic variants and the current guidelines are designed to detect only severe deficiency. The Gene Food Iron Deficiency Report offers users a window into their genetic risk for low iron levels so they can address the issue before iron levels get too low.

Carbs are GOOD
★★★★★

“Once I went back to carbs (based on the Okinawa diet) and quit the whole 30/paleo diet as well as any attempts at Keto or low-carb, my weight stopped rising, and actually started to go down (and I didn’t even follow the Okinawa diet very strictly, and did no caloric restriction)!”

Best health decision of my adult life
★★★★★

“Acquiring a custom nutrition plan from Gene Food was the single best health decision of my adult life. I frequent the Gene Food blog & the Gene Food podcast. John O’Connor and Dr. Aaron Gardner are focused on providing individuals with the very best science based information today. I believe their individualized approach, not the “one size fits all” seen frequently, is the future of optimizing health and wellness.”

Find out how your body actually handles carbs

Low-carb works for some people and backfires for others. In the PREDICT-1 trial, genetics accounted for nearly half of the variation in how much blood sugar rose two hours after a meal. Our CLIA-certified test scores your carbohydrate response across multiple validated SNPs, matches you to one of 20 diet types, and turns it into a plan: the carbs that suit you, the ones to limit, and a two-week meal plan built around them.

Frequently asked questions

Iron deficiency is the world’s most common nutrient deficiency and it’s becoming more common, especially in women and children. New studies show that as many as 30% of women and children can be considered iron deficient. (R)

People are considered iron-deficient when ferritin levels drop below 15 µg/L in adults and 12 µg/L in children. However, these levels were developed by the World Health Organization based on a small number of studies, and the WHO levels reflect severe iron deficiency.

Although iron deficiency is usually identified with a blood test, knowing your genetic predisposition can help prioritize early intervention so iron levels can be addressed well before a severe deficiency occurs.

Further, iron deficiency can often result in fatigue and low energy levels, which are common symptoms for several conditions. Knowing that maintaining adequate iron levels may be an issue genetically can help zero in on a personalized approach to health management.

This report is included with the Basic Gene Food DNA test, alongside your diet type and core nutrition reports. Current kit pricing is shown above.

Like all our tests, the Iron Deficiency Report is a simple cheek swab test. The test kit includes a self-addressed return envelope and detailed instructions for taking it. The swab sample is sent to our CLIA-certified laboratory in Houston, where the sequencing occurs.
