Cholesterol & LDL report

Learn how genetics play a role in cholesterol & LDL response

Along with observational studies and clinical trials, genetic studies have provided key evidence for the causal role of LDL cholesterol in heart disease. Gene variants associated with lower LDL cholesterol levels are associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular events, further supporting the idea that lowering LDL cholesterol can reduce the risk of heart disease. Conversely, some SNPs are associated with elevated LDL and APOB levels. The Gene Food LDL response report uses polygenic risk scoring to identify genetic markers associated with higher and lower LDL cholesterol levels.

Carbs are GOOD
★★★★★

“Once I went back to carbs (based on the Okinawa diet) and quit the whole 30/paleo diet as well as any attempts at Keto or low-carb, my weight stopped rising, and actually started to go down (and I didn’t even follow the Okinawa diet very strictly, and did no caloric restriction)!”

Best health decision of my adult life
★★★★★

“Acquiring a custom nutrition plan from Gene Food was the single best health decision of my adult life. I frequent the Gene Food blog & the Gene Food podcast. John O’Connor and Dr. Aaron Gardner are focused on providing individuals with the very best science based information today. I believe their individualized approach, not the “one size fits all” seen frequently, is the future of optimizing health and wellness.”

Find out how your body actually handles carbs

Low-carb works for some people and backfires for others. In the PREDICT-1 trial, genetics accounted for nearly half of the variation in how much blood sugar rose two hours after a meal. Our CLIA-certified test scores your carbohydrate response across multiple validated SNPs, matches you to one of 20 diet types, and turns it into a plan: the carbs that suit you, the ones to limit, and a two-week meal plan built around them.

Frequently asked questions

The inability of the cardiology and lipid community to explain the why behind a patient’s dyslipidemia with widespread sterol testing has left an informational void filled with bad information that often downplays the role of APOB and LDL in heart disease. Genetic testing for well-established and scientifically backed markers associated with elevated LDL and familial hypercholesterolemia gives people an explanation for why they may see elevated lipids. In turn, understanding foundational genetic risk factors is key to creating a personalized approach to health and wellness.

Dietary protocols can have a big impact on APOB and LDL levels, and the Gene Food LDL Response report is designed to provide guidance on how different diets impact cardiovascular risk by genotype.

As one example, the risk "G" allele of 68777C>G in the PPARG gene has been identified as potentially increasing cardiovascular risk while on a diet high in saturated fat. Conversely, there may be a beneficial effect when overall fat intake is relatively low.

Studies in humans showed that the ratio of saturated to unsaturated fats within total dietary fat intake may act as a better marker. When the U:S ratio was low (<0.33 i.e. more saturated fat in the diet), then cardiovascular risk markers (LDL-C, HDL-C) were increased; as the ratio normalized and more unsaturated fats were incorporated, the risk decreased.

This report is available with the Methylation Bundle (Health Intelligence), alongside the core reports included with your Gene Food DNA test. Current bundle pricing is shown above.

Like all our tests, the LDL response test is a simple cheek swab test. A self-addressed return envelope is included with the test kit, as are detailed instructions for taking the test. The swab sample is sent to our CLIA-certified laboratory in Houston, where the sequencing occurs.
