Lp(a) report

Learn whether you carry genetic markers associated with elevated Lp(a)

Lipoprotein (a) is a uniquely atherogenic type of lipoprotein that contains a standard apolipoprotein b protein combined with an apolipoprotein a “tail.” Sometimes called “genetic bad cholesterol” by the layperson, Lp(a) increases the risk for cardiovascular disease, and yet most cardiologists do not routinely test for Lp(a) levels. Polygenic risk scoring can identify individuals at greater risk for elevated Lp(a). The Gene Food Lp(a) report scores for SNPs associated with higher Lp(a) to give a greater understanding of long-term cardiovascular risk and therapies tailored to manage that risk.

The best DNA diet app
★★★★★

“I’ve tried several other companies, including InsiderTracker and DNAfit; if your primary concern is diet then I would absolutely recommend Gene Food as the best of the bunch.”

Carbs are GOOD
★★★★★

“Once I went back to carbs (based on the Okinawa diet) and quit the whole 30/paleo diet as well as any attempts at Keto or low-carb, my weight stopped rising, and actually started to go down (and I didn’t even follow the Okinawa diet very strictly, and did no caloric restriction)!”

Best health decision of my adult life
★★★★★

“Acquiring a custom nutrition plan from Gene Food was the single best health decision of my adult life. I frequent the Gene Food blog & the Gene Food podcast. John O’Connor and Dr. Aaron Gardner are focused on providing individuals with the very best science based information today. I believe their individualized approach, not the “one size fits all” seen frequently, is the future of optimizing health and wellness.”

Find out how your body actually handles carbs

Low-carb works for some people and backfires for others. In the PREDICT-1 trial, genetics accounted for nearly half of the variation in how much blood sugar rose two hours after a meal. Our CLIA-certified test scores your carbohydrate response across multiple validated SNPs, matches you to one of 20 diet types, and turns it into a plan: the carbs that suit you, the ones to limit, and a two-week meal plan built around them.

Frequently asked questions

The future of precision medicine requires a personalized approach, especially for preventing cardiovascular disease, which is the number one cause of mortality in the United States. High levels of Lp(a) are associated with an increased risk of coronary artery disease, heart attacks, and strokes. Knowing your Lp(a) level can help tailor a personalized approach to heart health with your physician, including exploring drugs, like PCSK9 inhibitors which are effective at lowering Lp(a). Further, large-scale studies, including ASPREE and the Women’s Health Study, have found that carriers of certain SNPs in the LPA gene, which is associated with higher serum Lp(a), may be able to benefit from aspirin as a preventative measure, whereas in the general population, the bleeding risk outweighs any benefit. Most cardiologists agree that those with higher Lp(a) should be even more vigilant about keeping APOB levels in a healthy range.

The Gene Food polygenic risk score for Lp(a) includes SNPs from the following genes: APOB, APOE, APOH, CETP, CPS1, HP, LPA, LPL, LDLR, FUT2, PCCB, SORT1

Only modestly. The primary driver of Lp(a) levels is genetics.

Polygenic risk scoring has been able to accurately predict individuals and families prone to elevated levels of Lp(a). For more, we recommend this article published in the Journal Circulation: Value of Genetic Testing for Lp(a) Variants

This report is available with the Methylation Bundle (Health Intelligence), alongside the core reports included with your Gene Food DNA test. Current bundle pricing is shown above.

Like all our tests, the Lp(a) test is a simple cheek swab test. A self-addressed return envelope is included with the test kit, as are detailed instructions for taking the test. The swab sample is sent to our CLIA-certified laboratory in Houston, where the sequencing occurs.
