Vitamin D Deficiency Report

Learn whether you have a genetic risk for vitamin D deficiency

Vitamin D plays a key role in the absorption of calcium from the gut, which is required for healthy bone formation, muscle, and heart activity, as well as numerous other cell functions. Genetics influences our ability to maintain healthy levels of many micronutrients, including Vitamin D. The Gene Food Vitamin D Deficiency report gives insight into our vitamin D needs which makes it easier to create a personalized approach to getting adequate amounts of this important nutrient.

Carbs are GOOD
★★★★★

“Once I went back to carbs (based on the Okinawa diet) and quit the whole 30/paleo diet as well as any attempts at Keto or low-carb, my weight stopped rising, and actually started to go down (and I didn’t even follow the Okinawa diet very strictly, and did no caloric restriction)!”

“Acquiring a custom nutrition plan from Gene Food was the single best health decision of my adult life. I frequent the Gene Food blog & the Gene Food podcast. John O’Connor and Dr. Aaron Gardner are focused on providing individuals with the very best science based information today. I believe their individualized approach, not the “one size fits all” seen frequently, is the future of optimizing health and wellness.”

Find out how your body actually handles carbs

Low-carb works for some people and backfires for others. In the PREDICT-1 trial, genetics accounted for nearly half of the variation in how much blood sugar rose two hours after a meal. Our CLIA-certified test scores your carbohydrate response across multiple validated SNPs, matches you to one of 20 diet types, and turns it into a plan: the carbs that suit you, the ones to limit, and a two-week meal plan built around them.

Frequently asked questions

Getting adequate vitamin D is essential for health, yet vitamin D needs can vary by genotype.

The vitamin D receptor (VDR) encoded by the gene VDR is the receptor for the bioactive form of vitamin D, calcitriol.

Several studies have shown that the shorter VDR protein produced by the presence of the rs2228570 (FokI) ‘C’ allele is more transcriptionally active. Given the same vitamin D levels, someone with the short ‘C’ allele VDR protein will display increased expression of vitamin D-dependent genes. This increased activation of vitamin D-dependent genes results in a greater uptake of calcium from the intestine, which was shown to increase bone density.

Those with the rs2228570 (FokI) ‘C’ allele may not require vitamin D dietary supplements or at least may require a lower dose, as long as they are obtaining sufficient quantities from exposure to sunlight or through diet.

This report is included with the Basic Gene Food DNA test, alongside your diet type and core nutrition reports. Current kit pricing is shown above.

Like all our tests, the Vitamin D Deficiency Report is a simple cheek swab test. The test kit includes a self-addressed return envelope and detailed instructions for taking it. The swab sample is sent to our CLIA-certified laboratory in Houston, where the sequencing occurs.
